Background Check/Fingerprints
To become employed as a childcare provider it is mandatory for facilities to run a background check at no cost to the potential employee. DHS also requires that you go and get fingerprints completed. This will ensue a cost and must be completed before being able to be put on a schedule. Name and address of one place to get fingerprints completed is listed below.
ERS Inc.
625 1st Avenue SW
Cedar Rapids, IA 52405
Professional Workforce Registry (iPower)
You will need to create an iPower DHS training account. This site tracks all of the training that you take as a childcare provider. Please write down your username (recommended to be your first name.lastname@iowaid). This may not work if someone in the state has the same name as you. Add a middle initial or some other character to make it your own. You will need to remember the username since you will need to enter it in the ISU Moodle site when creating your account there. This will tie your training on the ISU Moodle site to your training information for the state of Iowa.
Once you have an account on the training registry (iPower) you will want to enroll in the Iowa Early Learning Standards, Universal Precautions, and Essentials training. Please make sure that you choose the training that says in small lettering "Iowa State University Extension and Outreach," or you will be signing up to attend a class in person and you want to be signed up to take all of this training online.
Once logged in, you will "Search Trainings" listed at the top of the registry in blue. In the training title box, you will type in "Essentials" (for example) and then click on the purple box titled "Search". Scroll down until you see "Essentials Childcare Preservice Series" with 12 clock hours. This course is Free. You will then click on the red "Enroll" button to enroll in the training class. You will take the training at the Iowa State University (ISU) Extension Office Moodle site.
Iowa Early Learning Standards / Universal Precautions / Essentials
Iowa Early Learning Standards is a 2-hour course that does not need to be renewed per DHS but must be taken per Kingdom Kids standards.
Universal Precautions is a 1-hour course that needs to be renewed every year.
Essentials Training is 12 hours of basic childcare training and expires after 3 years.
Log in to the ISU Extension Moodle site to create an account. You need to make sure you include your iowaid in your profile so this will tie you to the training registry. If you forget to include your iowaid you will not be able to take any quizzes or print your certificates.
Make sure you complete everything in each module and print the certificate. Quick Tip: You should have a file to keep training for your personal records.
You must also email or print all your training certificates to give to the Director before being put on the schedule.
Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Training
MCART is a 2-hour training and will need to be updated every 3 years. If you renew before your 3-year expiration date, you can take a 1-hour refresher course instead of the entire training class.
Child and Adult Care Food Program
Watching the CACFP orientation video will solidify your understanding of the CACFP program.
You will also be required to take Iowa CACFP Steps to Success Training Modules for the food program. You will need to go to the Iowa Learning Online Professional Development website and create an account. Then click on the “Steps to Success” and take the training listed below, according to the position you are hired for…
