When looking for a daycare, there are several essential things to consider. Is the facility clean? Are the teachers highly trained and passionate about educating children? Will your child be able to learn through play, positive reinforcement, and repetition? Well, here are signs to look out for in a great daycare;
The daycare is properly licensed.
Licensing is a government requirement that helps ensure the daycare meets certain standards. It also protects both the children and parents. If you are considering a new daycare, ensure they are properly licensed by checking with your state’s department of early education and care or licensing agency.
The daycare has highly trained teachers and staff.
When considering a daycare, it’s important to get a sense of the level of training and experience of each staff member. While all teachers should have a college degree, there are also other factors to consider when evaluating their education. Some requirements include:
- A background in early childhood education
- Experience working with infants and toddlers
They have strong parent partnerships and communication.
A daycare’s most important thing to look for is strong parent partnerships and communication. If the daycare has a Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), then it’s likely that they are committed to developing strong relationships with their parents.
One good sign is if they encourage parents to visit the center and participate in volunteer activities on a regular basis. Another good sign is if you can see that they have allowed parents to be involved in their decision-making process by voting on issues or being members of the board of directors. You also want to make sure that your child’s teacher has an open door policy where she encourages you as a parent, at any time during the year, not just when school starts or ends, but throughout the entire school year!
There is safe play equipment, toys, and activities for students.
Safe play equipment, toys, and activities are also essential to a great daycare. They should be age-appropriate for the students who will be using them. Toys should be clean and in good condition (and cleaned regularly). They should not have small parts or pieces that could potentially break off, or be sharp enough to hurt another child. Finally, if you’re choosing a high-quality daycare center for your child(ren), it’s likely that the toys will be well-made and durable–so don’t worry about buying new ones!
The daycare follows health and safety guidelines.
As a parent, you want to know that your child will be safe at daycare. A good daycare will have a plan for handling emergencies, accidents, and infectious diseases. This is especially important if your child has asthma or other chronic conditions that require daily medication.
- They have an emergency plan. The daycare should have written instructions detailing what they do when there’s an emergency such as a fire or medical emergency involving one of the children. If a fire breaks out during nap time, how quickly can everyone exit safely? Do they have an evacuation plan? What about when it’s not nap time—how will staff members get all the children out safely in an emergency situation?
- They have safety precautions in place for potential hazards such as spills or electrical issues. For example, if someone spills water near electrical outlets (which can cause electrocution), does the school already have mats available to help prevent this from happening again?
